Sick Building Syndrome
With cold weather upon us, we will be spending more time indoors, breathing air that seldom is freshened by an open door or open window. There is a condition called “Sick Building Syndrome”, or SBS, and it is the consequence of very real health threats. Vapors from construction materials and furnishings are the causes, and some of the symptoms are migraines, itchy or watery eyes, scratchy throat, headaches, coughs, and general fatigue and malaise. Usually the symptoms diminish after you leave the building for a while, and return after you are indoors again in the affective area.
The toxic fumes are given off by synthetic textiles, including draperies, upholstery, carpeting, and even permanent press clothing. Also look to particle board (this includes wood fiber wall paneling), ceiling tiles, wallboard, paints/stains/varnishes, caulking compounds and construction adhesives. Even wood pulp products like paper bags and cardboard can be culprits.
There is a simple solution. Read tomorrow to learn more.
