The Green Way to Clean a Fiberglass Tub
If you have a fiberglass tub or shower, you can safely clean them without chemicals. Fiberglass manufacturers recommend not using any harsh chemicals or abrasives.
Soap scum will build up on fiberglass just as it does on other surfaces. A mild to moderate alkali solution will help you clean your tub. Use baking soda in warm water, or trisodium phosphate in warm water. If you have considerable buildup, try making a paste of baking soda and warm water, and scrub with it using a sponge or soft cloth. A soft nylon brush may also be useful around fixtures.
Repeated gentle rubbing may take a little longer, but it will preserve the finish on your fiberglass. Be sure to rinse thoroughly. If you have hard water, wiping the surface dry after each use will prevent water spots from appearing.
If the finish is dull on your fiberglass tub, some manufacturers suggest using a marine polish made for fiberglass boats to restore the shine. Follow the instructions on the polish container. These will make the surface slippery as well as shiny, so if you polish use extra caution in the tub or shower to avoid slipping. The polish itself is not chemical free by a long shot, but the long lasting finish it puts on your tub can allow you to clean for many months without using any chemicals.
