Start Garden Plants the Cheapskate Way

Published by hifive at 10:32 pm under Garden Plans Edit This

Some people call it cheapskate. I call it frugal.

If you start some of your garden plants indoors early, there is no need to purchase expensive starter packs or trays.

I save cake containers and aluminum foil baking pans (the ones with the clear plastic domed lids) to use as indoor greenhouses. I’ve been known to rummage through trash after church pitch-in dinners to retrieve these things. Who can just toss them away?

The cake containers usually have ridged bottom sections, often with holes. Remember that and don’t place them where they might leak water and ruin floors or furniture. The drainage holes are actually a good thing for some seedlings, especially if you have a tendency to overwater. I use homemade newspaper starter pots or peat pellets in the cake containers, and they are perfect.

The aluminum pans are also great. I have limited window area, and none of my windows face south. The aluminum reflects light, and that’s always good. Sometimes I place the small sterile planting cubes in these to get seeds started. I also like to fill the aluminum with compost and direct seed broccoli, cabbage, etc. If you need to heat your compost for sterility reasons, you can slide the pan right into your oven.
